Mobilization pontoon marks start of Wagenborg's first decommissioning project

Today marks a significant milestone in the decommissioning of the G14B offshore platform located in the North Sea, as Wagenborg successfully started to mobilize the pontoon 'Wagenborg Barge 11' in her homeport Delfzijl for this task. This event is the first major step in fulfilling the recent decommissioning contract awarded by ENI to Wagenborg, highlighting the company's expertise and commitment to sustainable practices in the energy sector.

The mobilization of one of Wagenborg's largest sea-going pontoons involves the installation of two custom-built grillages by means of a 500 tons mobile crane. This bespoke solution highlights Wagenborg's engineering skills and deep understanding of the unique challenges posed by offshore decommissioning. Steel works for the grillage were constructed by shipyard Royal Niestern Sander, a 100% Wagenborg subsidiary.

Wagenborg's decommissioning contract with ENI

Wagenborg's recent contract with ENI underscores its pioneering role in the decommissioning landscape. The contract involves bringing the G14B offshore platform back to its original state, a task that demands precision, expertise and a deep understanding of environmental regulations. Wagenborg's extensive experience and wide range of owned assets and equipment make it a preferred partner for such high-stakes projects. Their ability to offer safe, reliable, and cost-efficient solutions sets them apart in the industry.

The Wagenborg Barge 11's role and capabilities

Central to this decommissioning endeavor is the Wagenborg Barge 11, one of the sea-going barges of Wagenborg. The barge, measuring 122 meters in lengthe and 36 meters in width, is perfectly suitable for carrying the G14B topside and jacket while decommissioning this offshore platform. After an accurate engineering phase, shipyard Royal Niestern Sander produced custom-made grillages. These structures are currently installed on the barge during the mobilization phase. The ability to mobilize such a sophisticated asset underscores Wagenborg's agility to handle complex decommissioning projects, providing clients with peace of mind and confidence in the process. The mobilization of Wagenborg Barge 11 is expected to be ready early August.

The crucial role of decommissioning in oil and gas

Decommissioning is a critical phase in the lifecycle of oil and gas infrastructure. When these production sites reach the end of their economic lifespan, it is imperative to safely dismantle and remove them to restore the environment to its original state. This process not only mitigates potential environmental hazards, but also allows for the responsible reuse of materials and site restoration, providing both economic and environmental benefits.

Wagenborg is at the forefront of these developments, continuously investing in assets and expertise to enhance their decommissioning capabilities. By staying ahead of industry trends and incorporating cutting-edge technology, Wagenborg ensures that they remain a leader in providing safe and reliable decommissioning services.
