Major milestone reached in construction of world’s first CO2 carrier

Wagenborg is proud to announce a major milestone in the construction of the world’s first CO2 carrier, the EasyMax CO2 carrier. Recently, the bridge deck was successfully installed at shipyard Niestern Sander, marking an important step forward in this groundbreaking project.

About the EasyMax CO2 Carrier

The EasyMax CO2 carrier is being built for INEOS, a global leader in chemicals and sustainability. This innovative vessel will play a key role in reducing carbon emissions by enabling the safe and efficient transportation of CO2. With its state-of-the-art design, the EasyMax CO2 carrier demonstrates our commitment to sustainable shipping and technological innovation.

Significance of the Bridge Deck Installation

The installation of the bridge deck is a critical phase in the construction process. It involves precision engineering and seamless collaboration between our teams at Wagenborg and Niestern Sander. This milestone brings us closer to delivering a vessel that will set new standards in the maritime industry.

Partnership with INEOS

This project is part of a landmark multi-year agreement between INEOS and Royal Wagenborg, formalized in November 2024 in the presence of HM King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands and HM King Frederik of Denmark. The EasyMax design, developed by Royal Wagenborg and Royal Niestern Sander, is celebrated for its sustainability, featuring a load capacity of 14,300 DWT and very low fuel consumption.

Future Role of the Vessel

The vessel will facilitate large-scale transport of CO2 to the Greensand storage site in the Danish North Sea, led by INEOS in partnership with Harbour Energy and Nordsøfonden. Edwin de Vries, Director Wagenborg Offshore, emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating, "The agreement between INEOS and Wagenborg is a new and unique step in the establishment of safe and efficient logistics in the full value chain of CCS on a large scale."

Looking Ahead

Wagenborg and Niestern Sander are proud to be at the forefront of this pioneering project, contributing to a more sustainable future for shipping and beyond.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to make progress on this remarkable vessel!
